Today Hemborough is a woodland area and farm close to the town of Dartmouth in Devon, but back in the latter part of the 19th century it was a hamlet which held race meetings in conjunction with Dartmouth. The course was in Hemborough, some 4 miles from Dartmouth, and a steeplechase was staged on Tuesday 13th September 1870. The opening 1 ½ mile Flat race was won by May Day owned by Mr Wakeham. The races were annual events, although not always high profile, and the last recorded meeting of the Hemborough Post Steeplechases was on Tuesday 20th September 1887 when Little Hero won the opening Alma Steeplechase, and the feature Hard Times Chase was won by Little Star. |
